Description of Umbra Conceal Floating Book Shelf, Large, Silver
For an ultra-minimal look, the Conceal bookshelf from Umbra mounts to the wall and becomes invisible behind a stack of books, giving the books the appearance of floating in mid-air. Attach the sturdy, L-shaped shelf to the wall with the included mounting hardware and slide one book onto the ledge so that the ledge is sandwiched between the book's cover and pages. Secure the cover in place using the integrated clips beneath the ledge. Stack up to 15-pound (or 8-inch) of medium to large books on top of the first book until the shelf is obscured from view. Conceal is constructed of strong, powder-coated steel and is available in two finishes. This model measures 5-1/2 by 7 by 6-1/2-inch. Also available is a smaller size for small books and a wider model that holds two stacks side by side. The patented design by Miron Lior is the winner of many design awards including the Umbra Pratt Design Competition. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this item is donated to the Pratt Institute School of Art and Design. I ordered one of these invisible bookshelves to try out, and will definitely be ordering more! The installation consisted on putting in one screw, couldn't be easier. Although, I'd recommend finding a stud on the wall to mount the shelf on, or otherwise not loading the shelf up to full capacity.
The bottom part of the shelf definitely requires a large book - about the size of a textbook. But otherwise you can really use this shelf for books of any size once you get the bottom one taken care of. I also think that these definitely look better in sets of two or threes, otherwise it may just look out of place.
One downfall - if you use a hardcover book on the bottom, you have to be willing to either tape the dust cover to the binding, or take it off completely. Otherwise the bottom will just droop.
Overall, very cool product and a nice way to store books.
