Tools and Hardware Reviews of Vent-Miser 91665 Programmable Enery Saving Vent, 12-by-4-Inches, WhiteCustomer Review: Easy install and easy setup Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered two of these for the downstairs registers. Since I am the only one who uses the downstairs area, it didn't make sense to heat it during hours when I'm not down there. So, with that in mind, I fished around for a solution and stumbled upon these. I was originally thinking about figuring out how to add another zone to the heating system (it's only a 1 zone system right now) and learned that it would require some serious duct work with motorized pieces that would require electrician-level installation. Thankfully these Vent-Miser vents exist, because I avoided all that. I simply checked to make sure the size I was getting would be a direct replacement, and when they came in the mail I unscrewed the old registers, and screwed these in place. Programming them is about as complicated as programming a digital thermostat, and before long they were in place and working like a charm. I've had them a while now, and would recommend them for anyone who has a zone or a couple of rooms that are infrequently used. Big plus that the actual "brain" of the unit pops out so you don't have to stand there poking at your ceiling while programming it if you have a ceiling register (like I do.)
Mine are set to open up about an hour before I get home from work, and close about the time I usually go to bed. My wife stays up way later than I do, so the heater runs late into the night, but it's now focused on heating just the upstairs where she's at while I sleep as opposed to the whole house, which was a big waste of money.
