Tools and Hardware Reviews of Venta VS207 Sonic Digital Cool and Warm Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier

Customer Review: Love everything but the humidistat
Summary: 4 Stars

I can't vouch for longevity yet, as I just purchased the Venta this week. I am much more pleased with the noise level than with the Holmes I returned after one day (a humidier with LOUD fan that cycled constantly), and our previous wicking humidifiers. This unit sits near our bed and is almost silent.

When I was looking at the boxes of various humidifiers, one thing I didn't like is that there is nothing on the box indicating the size room this unit can handle. I just compared the output size to some others and figured it would work for our 225 sq. ft. bedroom. Living in a northern state, I liked the idea that I could use warm mist for now, but change to cool mist when the warmer weather returns.

Having owned large humidifiers in the past with the very big tanks, this one is much more user-friendly. I don't have to wait for my spouse to lug the tank, and this one fits under our reverse osmosis tap in the bedroom. It does seem to drip a lot when you take it off the base, so be careful.

I was worried when I first plugged it in and it blinked at me, not working. My suggestion for new units is to wait a few minutes after you soak the filter and fill the tank to start the machine. I did that after being blinked at, and it worked fine from that point on.

I've never owned a warm mist humidifier before, and was amazed at the volume this puts out. I'm happy to say I don't notice dampness beneath the unit, but I would recommend a rubber mat under it just for the drips when cleaning/filling the tank.

My main issue is that you should not rely on the humidistat on the machine. Mine has yet to read over 34% humidity, but the separate humidistat I have and trust places the humidity at 46% right now. Getting an exact 40% seems impossible, but I am definitely breathing better.

All in all I've been pleased so far.

Still have two humidifiers, still work perfectly. Yes, there is a bit of white dust, even with our reverse osmosis filtered water, but it isn't heavy. Very pleased with this product. I am pretty religious about the weekly cleaning and haven't seen any mold/mildew.

Customer Review: Worthwhile investment
Summary: 4 Stars

Purchased the Venta Sonic VS207 through Amazon in late Fall 2007. I have not had it for long but will say that I am pleased with it so far.

After reading reviews, I did read the manual for setting it up and found that it does start. The manual recommends soaking the filter (it's part of the cap to the tank). That is no big deal. One thing, you definitely have to wait a few minutes after putting the filled tank on the device until it fills up the unit. You'll note that bubbles come out of the filter one at a time as the unit fills up. Turning on the device prior to this has no effect. Just wait it out. Hey, what's 5 minutes!

It is very quiet and really does a good job with getting a fairly large area room to a good humidity and maintaining that humidity.

I like the features of selecting vapor strength (which translates to low-med-high). The humidity level feature works well.

Some caveats to consider, but would not change my mind about the product are:
1. "Warm mist" setting is a bit cooler than what most dedicated warm mist humifiers give you.
2. Because of #1, you will find that it does leave some white dust, especially on electrical equipment (e.g., TVs). That is typical of EVERY cool mist humidifier I have ever known. The warm mist setting cuts back on this a bit, but it still does cause *some* (need to wipe the TV every few days).
3. Some critiques have mentioned that filling the tank is difficult. I find that this humifier is no different than any other. Yes, you have to flip it over. This is my 5th humidifier and they have ALL been like that. I find the large handle on the tank easier to deal with than other humidifiers. Now, placing it back down is a bit of puzzle-piece work but it is not all that bad.

I truly like this unit. I like the auto shutoff if it runs out of water. It runs during the day when I'm at work and my dogs are home. I am not afraid of any issues with the auto shutoff.

Also, it does a good job of not consuming too much water. It seems to regulate this very well.

Customer Review: Worth the money for a bedroom humidifier
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this humidifier in November of 2006. This was my fist humidifier to buy, so I do not have much to compare against. This little unit is amazing though. It's quite small compared to what I remember my mother having when I was little. It pumps out a lot of mist, and it does not take long for the desired humidity to be reached as long as the room is fairly small (~200 sq. ft). It is extremely quiet, and the only thing you hear is the occasional bubbling of water as the water from the tank moves into the base, and the clicking of the unit turning on and off. The clicking is not all that loud and does not wake me up when I am sleeping. This is my 2nd season to use it, and I have had no problems with it at all.

The things I do not like about the unit is that it does not do well in large rooms. When I placed it in my living room (~500 sq. ft), it ran an entire day, and never got up to 50% RH (when it was about 30 F outside). In my bedroom, however, it's perfect! I bought mine when they were still $150, and paying that much money, I would have expected it to work for larger rooms. I agree with other reviews who say it is awkward to fill. It does have a handle on the top to make it easier to carry though. The warm mist does not feel much warmer than the cool mist to me. I can feel a difference, but they both feel "cool" to me.

Overall, I am happy with the purchase. I really like the auto on/off for the desired humidity level and the fact that it is almost completely silent. It also has 3 levels of humidity output which I find very useful. Once the room has gotten to the desired humidity level, I turn it to a lower output level so that the unit runs smoother instead of turning on and off a bunch. These were the features I was looking for when buying mine, and it has met and exceeded my expectations with the exception of the room size. If you have the money for it, I think it is a great humidifier and I would definitely recommend it for a bedroom!

Customer Review: Does a very good job...and super quiet
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought my VS207 refurbished (elsewhere) and was quite impressed. I'd read the reviews about the humidistat being inaccurate, but especially for the refub price I decided to try it. I'm glad I did!

Yes, the humidity reading is off, but I also bought a Western Caliber III hunmidity/temp meter (about $15) to compare it to (then use later in my crawlspace where dampness is an issue) and found that the humidifier's humidity reading is off by 10%....whether the current humidity is low or high, it remains off by the same amount, therefore the guage is perfectly usable to me since I just add 10 to whatever it says. (Plus, what really matters is that you can set it to whatever is comfortable, regardless of what the number says, and it will maintain that level.)

Actually, I liked it so much that I just bought another unit since we have another baby on the way, and that unit's humidity display is dead-on accurate, so it seems like it's probably just a lack of proper factory calibration that makes it vary so much from unit to unit.

Vapor output is very good, and so quiet that I have to look for the vapor to believe it is actually running. I use it at the medium setting so the level in the room stays more constant and there is less cycling on/off. (High seems to raise it too quickly and causes it to cycle on/off more, but also, I have it in a fairly small bedroom.)

The "warm" setting is almost a joke (barely noticable if you feel the vapor coming out), but I did try it one evening and it did seem like the moister didn't make the room feel as cool as it would have otherwise. I'll probably rarely use the warm setting except maybe on very chilly nights.

I love the large tank. I don't have a problem with the handle position, but I can see how some people might....but if it's too awkward/heavy for you, just fill it less so it is lighter and easier to flip back over.
