No offense, but the previous review is a bit shortsighted. I had a similar, skeptical initial reaction when I saw a Vornado. At first glance, it looked very similar to other low-cost, plastic department store fans. Upon closer inspection, there is no comparison.
The 530B, due to its unique blade and housing design, and superior motor (see their site for details), blows WAY more air for its size than any other fan. Take a close look at how shallow the average fan blade is. Then look at Vornado's deep, sculpted blades. It blows as much or more air on the low, quiet setting than competing fans do on their high setting. It's pretty amazing, actually.
The 530B blows enough air for my bedroom, whereas competing fans this size I have to aim directly at me. As advertised, the fan is well used as a room circulator, in that you feel the gentle breeze throughout the room, rather than sticking it on a table and pointing at you.
People often gripe about "paying for the name" when it comes to consumer products. This is usually an unfair assertion with most products. You are not paying for the name, like you are in designer jeans, where only the name counts. Instead, you are paying for the superior quality and design of the manufacturer whose name is stamped on the housing. Simple market princples here -- if there was nothing to back up the name, the name wouldn't be valuable. They sell at the higher price because you get what you pay for.

Don't let the small size fool you-this fan moves a lot of air. There are any number of fans on the market, priced in the $10-$20 range, that are about the same physical size as the 530B (B=black) but, they don't perform anywhere near the Vornado. I had oft wondered why the Vornados were priced considerably higher than the competition. After plugging it in and turning it on I had my answer. I couldn't believe the air circulation this thing puts out. Definitely proof that you get what you pay for.
If you want a compact fan that gives great performance then this should be your first choice, I highly recommended it.
On the downside-the "warranty". This product comes with a 5 year warranty. Sounds impressive, doesn't it? Well, when you read the fine print-if it needs service you have to send it back to the manufacturer along with $20.00 to cover return shipping and handling. So, it will probably cost about $10.00 for shipping to Vornado plus the $20.00 return shipping to you and you're out $30.00. Pretty sad for a product priced slightly less than $40.00 from Amazon. I suspect that what they will do is send you a refurbished unit. You'd be better off throwing the bad unit away and purchasing a new one. Having said that I still think it's a fine product. Now, if they could do something about that "warranty" (like having a local repair facility) I'd be completely satisfied.

This is the third Vornado fan I have purchased. I also own a 783B "whole house" fan that I use to push cool air upstairs during the summer and a 733B "whole room" fan that I use to circulate air in our living/dining room areas. I have been very pleased with these fans since purchasing them two years ago. I don't know whether they have had a discernible impact on our energy consumption, but they certainly make the house more comfortable by evening out the hot and cool spots, just as they are designed to do.
I hesitated before purchasing this fan for my 3 y/o daughter's room based on some of the critical reviews. However I have been very happy with this fan. Despite its compact size, it circulates air very effectively throughout a large bedroom with very little noise on its medium setting. The High setting sounds like a typical fan's high setting, meaning you could have a phone conversation sitting next to one but might find it distracting. Medium, however, is barely audible (soft white noise), and low is truly whisper quiet.
Perhaps I could find flaws with the 530B if I put it under a microscope like some of the more harsh reviewers have, but it fits my needs perfectly and exceeded my high expectations.

Remarkable fan! I have always used fans in my home and office forever. I just like lots of air circulation, and when I'm a little hot, I like to fix it. I have always had lots of fans in my home. This fan is the ONLY one I have ever used that always remains quiet. If you have ever owned a fan, you know that sooner or later (usually sooner) they start making noises. Rattling fan covers and blades happen to every fan I ever had except the Vornado ones. I don't know why or how they do it but they do. I have 4 of these exact fans and love them. After five years they are still running quiet as ever and I keep them on 24hrs a day. None have stopped working either. I remember when I purchased the first one it cost more than others of the same size and I took a chance. The higher cost is far more than worth it. I have used these Vornado fans for the past four or five years. This new fan was a replacement for an identical Vornado fan which I thought had stopped working. Well I had somehow I had cut the power to the fan, hence the reason it quite. So now I have a spare as the old Vornado is still working perfectly.
Speaking of working, my little fan, will blow hard (about one-half the way across my two car garage). We recently had a yard sale and brother was it hot. So I plugged the, older of the two fans, into a wall plug in the garage. This Vornado fan kept a cooling breeze the whole day. So now as stated prior I have two of these identical fans and will not get rid of either one.
I can highly recommend these Vornado fans. Just shop around to find the best price for one.
