Tools and Hardware Reviews of Vornado EH1-0028-06 DVH Digital Vortex HeaterCustomer Review: Great for closed rooms; not so much for large, open rooms. Summary: 5 Stars
With some trepidation, I ordered this product from Amazon despite some of the negative reviews and in my short time spent with the heater, it's been a benefit. I live in a two-story home with an unfinished basement. During the winters (which seem to start in September here) the cost of heating the entire house to a comfortable level can be prohibitively expensive. Space heaters have the benefit of comfortably warming occupied bedrooms without my wasting money warming the unoccupied rooms. The EH1 quickly warms each of the 120-sq. ft. rooms to 75-degrees in just under 30 minutes and maintains that temperature for as long as the unit is turned on. The unit's thermostat can be set as high as 90-degrees and the three available modes are fan, high, and low. The low setting has been adequate for all of my needs so far, but in my largest room, we found the need to use the high setting to see an appreciable increase in temperature. From my experience, poorly insulated rooms that are larger than 160-sq. ft. will be too much for the EH1 to handle, but it performs admirably otherwise. The "Vortex" moniker is misleading as, unlike Vornado fans for instance, the EH1 does not move a lot of air, even at high settings. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the EH1 doesn't break down on me anytime soon and I'm hoping that keeping it free of dust will prolong its life.
UPDATE: I survived a long and brutal winter with the Vortex Heater and thank God for that! It worked great, kept the bedroom warm, never broke down. Still runs like a charm. I'm very glad I made this purchase and am changing my rating to 5 stars.
Customer Review: Amazing heater, More than worth its Price Summary: 5 Stars
I love this heater and I would buy another one even if the price was doubled. The only reason I haven't bought another one this year is that so far this winter, it hasn't been that cold and the vornado DVTH heater that I did buy last year is working well enough to heat up all 4 rooms of my Philadelphia PA 3rd floor row house apartment (all the rooms open up to each other and I have this heater running in the middle room. My ceilings are also not high). I never had to turn on my central gas heater last year (2005). As the reviews suggest, make sure you get the DVTH model of this heater and *not* the DVH. In my case, it takes about 10 - 20 minutes to get the room where it is running to the temperature I set (70 degrees) but the *whole* room feels and stays warmed up not just the area around the heater. The heated air circulates and warms up my other rooms also so that within the hour my entire apartment is warm enough that I can wear a long sleeved t-shirt and be comfortable. My electric bill increased about $100 more a month when I had this heater running continously for at least 25 days last year which is less than the $200 - $250 increased in my gas bill if I had used my central heat. One thing to note is that when I turned it on for the first time this year, there was a burning smell which I think is from the dust that collected in it over the summer so its probably a good idea to pack it away when it is not being used. It only had the burning smell the first time it was turned on and the heater was ok after that.
Customer Review: Just the right size for a small bedroom or large bathroom Summary: 5 Stars
One of the things our house (Central Arkansas) lacks is good insulation. In the winter, the master bathroom (which is nicely sized) gets pretty cold (exterior wall and big window). We were originally searching for a small electric heater to use at my wife's karate school (a large space); we hadn't had the gas turned on yet for the heater). Looking at a few stores, we stumbled across this little guy at the store and ordered via Amazon's iPhone app (much better price).
It did an okay job of taking the bite out of the cold air at the karate school (it was too small for the space, admittedly) but we got the central heat working there so it came back to the house. I put it in the master bath one night when my daughter wanted to take a bath and we were pleasantly surprised at how well it brought the room temp up (from about 65 to about 78 in about 10 minutes). It's since become a mainstay in the bathroom during the winter. I sometimes take it down to my home office (a large -- and very cheap -- picture window makes the room get pretty cold) and occasionally into my son's bedroom (which is a bonus room over the garage; it's on the house's central heat but because of the poor insulation it is noticeably colder than the rest of the house). In each circumstance it takes the bite out of the room pretty quickly.
YMMV (your mileage may vary) of course, but we've had nothing but good luck with it, and happily recommend it. It's not going to heat a big family room, but it'll keep smaller spaces comfortable.
Customer Review: Just What I Wanted... Summary: 5 Stars
Recently moved into a town home with an unfinished basement the size of a medium L-shaped bedroom. The room stays at about 65 degrees without heat so I used a Honeywell space heater and heat lamp and was frustrated with how the area around the pets would be too warm or too cold. The thermostat on the heater didn't seem to work too well (fluctuated as much as 2 or 3 degrees in either direction (up to a 5-6 degree differentiation). Furthermore the rest of the room was cold. I thought about circulating with a fan then I decided to go a different route and get this heater. It's perfect. On the low 750 watt setting at 72 degrees it only took a little while to get the room up to 72 degrees; the entire room. Even with an occasional draft coming in from going in and out of the garage it kept it at the same place. The area around the heat lamp 20-30" from the source is 2-3 degrees warmer. So it's just what I wanted... about 74 or so for the bird and about 72 for me working down there without having to mess around with anything. I have an external thermometer down there to keep track of how warm it is when I'm upstairs and it has only deviated .2 degrees (not 2 degrees) in hours even though I've gone in and out with the garage door opening etc. If you're looking for temperature control in a small to medium size room that is usually closed off (and even occasionally opened) this is really awesome. I only got it today but it's seriously exactly what I was looking for. A little spendy but seems worth it.
Customer Review: Great heater Summary: 5 Stars
I did a lot of research before I bought this heater because I didn't want to pay this much. All I can say now is that I'm glad I did buy it. I have electric baseboard heat and I was looking for something to help save on the cost of operating those, which gets pretty expensive. I plugged this in, turned it on, set it and it has been running for over a month now. I have the thermostat for the baseboard heaters set but they haven't come on since I've been using this heater, and it has been very cold. This little heater heats the living room and adjoining dining room all by itself, and the heat even radiates out to other areas. You really don't think it's heating at all because you don't feel a blast of heat coming out of it like a regular heater, but you do feel it all over the room. It does a much better job than the baseboard heaters because it moves the heat around the room. I don't notice any cold spots anymore. I have gotten one electric bill since I've been using it and my usage was down, so it is saving me money. It will more than pay for itself. As for noise, it's very minimal, sometimes I don't even think it's running. You would have to be super sensitive to noise to complain about it on this model. I do recommend the digital model rather than the cheaper one though because it is very simple to set the temperature you want. I bought mine from Amazon because they had the lowest price at the time and shopping online is much easier than running all over town wasting gas.
