Tools and Hardware Reviews of Vornado HU1-0013-11 Standard 4-Gallon Vortex HumidifierCustomer Review: serious humidifier Summary: 5 Stars
I've had my two 4 gallon Vornados about 10 months and am very happy with them. I had a Sears Console humidifier which was very problematic and a Bionaire many years ago, which was a complete joke.
I really don't have a single complaint. I have only noticed the 'glug' sound when replacing the tank after filling it. I run it on maximum about six hours a day, so I refill one tank on each unit about every other day. The tanks are easy to pull out, easy to fill to the top, and easy to put back. The fan is certainly audible but I can watch TV or talk on the phone right by the unit. I don't keep it in the bedroom where I sleep. I'm very sensitive to noise when I am trying to go to sleep, so even at the medium setting with its soft purring sound I'd probably be bothered by it. I fill it in the kitchen sink which is plenty big enough. The bathroom sink is almost certainly too small. I haven't had any problem with them dripping or wetting the carpet where they sit on the floor. It is hard to see when the tanks need refilling. I just lean them out slightly when I check at the end of the day. If the tank is very light then it needs refilling. It does need some space on each side to remove the tanks and then lean them back in so they fit correctly. It looks good to me, not ugly. It is plastic, but is well designed and gives an impression of quality parts.
I live in Arizona and open the windows daily, so the humidity often drops to 20% or less before I close the windows and start the humidifiers. My two Vornados raise the humidity about 10% per hour in my 1000 sq foot apartment. With the heater or AC running it will definitely be less than that. I always run it at the high/max setting and its efficiency slows down when it hits 50 or 55% humidity according to my humidity gauge.
Phoenix has very hard water, so I add about two oz of bacteriostat in the base, and two oz of vineger to the base and to each of the tanks once a week. I also flip the filters up-side-down but facing the same direction toward the inside/outside. This gives me three months of high efficiency before replacing the filters. Every three months I clean the base tray, which is very easy, and replace the filters. I didn't have much luck when I tried to rinse the filters out, since they're not that durable and then they don't fit and perform as well. The bacteriostat, which I still buy at Sears, seems to be even more important than the vinegar in keeping the filters wet and soft and free of scum, so they stay efficient. Before I started my weekly maintenance I was getting little more than a month from a $10 set of filters. At $80 per year for two humidifiers that keep the humidity between 50 and 55%, I am well satisfied.
The Vornados replaced a $150 Sears Console Quiet Comfort humidifier, which had one fan motor stop working in less than a year. It had a very short warranty, unlike the Vornado five year warranty. Even before that, though, it would only work efficiently for about one month on expensive filters before they got mineralized and scummy. It was very cheaply made. It wouldn't run at all unless it was totally level. It was big and ugly, very loud on high, which was the only useful setting. It was difficult to fill the tanks, and very difficult to clean and scrape off all the mineral deposits in all the complex parts with heavy grease and dust around the motor fans and grill openings.
I'm glad I finally found a large space humidifier with no real problems.
