Customer Review: Fine Hygrometer: Pros & Cons and work arounds
Summary: 5 Stars
Price: Best bang for the buck, by far! Will not break the bank, (even in this economy).
Appearance: Easy to read, sexy enough. Other hygrometers may be envious.
Accuracy: I have two of these and they are in agreement within .5% RH and .5ºF, so calibration is no doubt fine.
Pro: The units are touted to be accurate to +or- 1 percent.
Con: The manufacturer's instruction oddly tells you not to test the calibration and in essence says "just trust me" which of course has the opposite effect and makes it seem suspicious. Their attempt at humor, simply leaves you hanging with no other suggested solution.
Con: There is no way to change the calibration of the unit.
Solution: Owning two or more units will allow comparison and mathematical calibration, by simply noting the differences, E.g., I know that the two I have are within a half percent, which is plenty accurate, and if I was concerned about them not being accurate at a particular RH range, I could compare them to a different brand, or simply buy into their "trust me" statement, which considering their advertised accuracy details, is probably more reasonable than it sounds.
Pro: The unit will recall high and low RH, since the last time it was cleared.
Con: There is no built-in way to determine the average RH over a given period of time, which would be valuable information to have, depending on what the unit is being used for.
Solution: Frequently checking highs and lows and record keeping is the only way to accurately know your average RH, though that may be overkill if your desired range is big enough. E.g. if you are desiring to keep your acoustic guitar at an ideal range of 45% to 55% and can determine during a particular time of year that your range is bottoming out around 40% and topping off around 60%, depending on the time of day or temperature, and is generally inside your target range, your RH is probably right where you need it to be. (The moisture content of the wood changes much slower than the air and will be at the average of your range.) If the RH is consistently well above or below your target range, your average RH will follow, accordingly, and you may then need to do something to control it, by using a humidifier or fan, etc. (In most parts of the country, the heating season (winter) will be the one requiring your intervention.)
Pro: The unit has a stick-able magnet and disk attached for easy mounting and relocation of the unit.
Con: The metal disk is stuck to the unit, instead of the magnet, which is backwards. The magnet should be stuck to the unit so that a person can simply mount metal objects such as washers, in various locations, cases, etc., where they might want to place the unit.
Solution: The metal disk can be sliced off of unit and then the magnet secured in it's place using the already attached double-stick tape. As an alternative, the magnet could be bonded via the tape to the already attached metal disk, or it can be left magnetically attached, as is, and it will still be attracted to other metal objects where you might like to mount the unit. I chose to simply remove the metal disk and secure the magnet, to keep the unit at the lowest profile.
Summation: If you are looking for an accurate hygrometer at a great price, this is the one. If you are looking for something to complain about that is not actually pertinent to your need for accurately measuring RH, this is also the one (see "Cons" above). In either case, I say buy it. In fact, I think I will wind up buying one for every guitar or other wooden instrument case, and also any room where I care to monitor the RH. I expect they will prove each other to be well calibrated and consistently accurate for several years to come.
