Tools and Hardware Reviews of White-Rodgers 1F97-1277 Programmable 1 Heat/1 CoolCustomer Review: High quality, well designed, flexible programmable thermostat Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking to replace five of the typical, round Honeywell thermostats in our home with programmables. After a bit of research I chose the 90 series White-Rodgers. This thermostat was among those recommended by Consumer Reports. The features that were important to me were: 7-day programming to accommodate a somewhat wacky schedule, automatic transition between cooling and heat cycles, permanent storage of programmed options and schedules (non-volatile memory), and ease of use.
So far I have installed and programmed all units and we have been running the cooling schedule. I have been very, very impressed. The units are solidly and smartly built. The wall plate has a connection block to which the main body presses onto. That made installation simple and secure. The large, blue back-lit display is easy to read and the touch screen easy to use. Options and menu are well thought out.
You can set up each thermostat with 2 or 4 periods per day, different for each of seven days of the week (there is also a 5-1-1 option.) While the label of the 2 or 4 periods is the same (example, Day or Night on the 2 period option) the start time for each day can be different. For example, Day can be 5:00 AM on one day and 7:00 AM on another. You set the time and temperature for each period, a separate set of entries for cooling and heating. They provide a Copy function which makes it very easy to replicate the settings to all days or a single day. It uses year, month, day logic and therefore can handle daylight savings time changes automatically.
The temperature hold feature has two options. You can temporarily override the temperature within a schedule period, which will revert to the programmed temperature when the next period triggers, or a permanent hold. Another nice feature is Energy Management Recovery which makes it possible to set the desired temperature at a given time. The unit will start the heating/cooling prior to that time so the desired temperature is reached.
There are a number of other features that shouldn't be dismissed, like keypad lockout and the change filter reminder.
I see in some threads complaints about digital thermostats because of the "click" that occurs when the unit activates heating or cooling. While there is a click from the White-Rodgers, it is hardly noticeable.
None of these programmables are inexpensive but I believe that the quality and design of this product earns the price tag. Someone really thought about the user when they put this together.
