These shelves are infinitely useful.
I have the 48" wide version, which Target used to sell in store, and the 36" version. I have both the black paint and chrome versions. I have 2 in use as fabric storage, and 1 in the pantry.
Out of the box they are easy to assemble. Once assembled they can be taken apart and adjusted again when different shelf heights are needed.
They are still solid after 3 years' use. I have experienced no paint chipping and no damage to the finish. The high weight limit is extremely useful - a person can put all manner of canned goods on the shelf without damage.
They may not be the prettiest thing around, they have a utilitarian look about them, but they're so useful that I don't care.

I've tried both this version of shelving and two other versions that were more plain, gray steel varieties that assembled with pre-formed rivets that slot together. One of those cut the heck out of my hands. The other had no sharp edges, but was extremely unstable during assembly, and effectively required two people to hold it together until fully framed.
Not only is this shelving much, much easier for a person to put together by him- or herself, it is also much more stable that the alternatives. And, despite the fact that it's fairly light-weight (and thus easier to move than the alternatives), it's at least as solid. I'll buy more of these.

....when it comes to shelving.
Like the previous reviewer, we tried many different metal shelves, but none are made as sturdy or with the same quality as Whitmor, and assembly is a breeze.
Not only do we use these shelves as basic storage, but they're so attractive that we also use the 4 tier chrome shelf as an entertainment unit. With each shelf holding up to 350 lbs., you have limitless possibilities.
You might pay a bit more for Whitmor, but the quality is well worth the price.

I received the shelving unit yesterday and just lifting the box told me this was a heavy duty set of shelves. Assembly was a breeze and I've already loaded it down. It is sturdy and holds the weighty items with no problem. I am using it in a closet to organize my gardening equipment, recycling crates and oversize cooking utensils. It really holds a lot of "stuff." It sure is great to find a product that exceeds your expectations for an affordable price.Customer Review: Chrome Shelving Unit

We are pleased with this shelf. It was extremely easy to put together and looks like it will be just as easy to readjust the shelves if we ever need to. I was worried that it would look too industrial, but it is attractive enough to be out on display. You should shop around though, we found it on sale the next week at Fred Myers on sale for about $5 cheaper than what we paid on Amazon. Not a huge difference, especially since we had free shipping.
