Customer Review: If you are working with salvaged lumber...
Summary: 5 Stars

and don't have a big budget, this is the right start. It seems to detect anything of any size that is metal. I burn up a bandsaw blade on a nail that I had no chance of seeing, but not anymore. This device has detected everything. It is quick and very easy.

Customer Review: Wizard detector
Summary: 5 Stars

The product came very timely (even in the middle of the Christmas rush). It was in original packaging and our son loved it. Amazon did a great job!

Customer Review: Yet another necessary tool
Summary: 4 Stars

Like many people who bought this product, I use a fair amount of old lumber. I have pretty much rebuilt my old house and haven't thrown away the old growth wood! I am afraid there are snakes in the piles of salvaged wood... but the piles are a lot smaller now because I use the stuff.

One reason I can safely recycle the wood is because of this detector. It works perfectly for me on the typical planks and up to 4X8 wood I stash. I have never hit a nail yet, so it is sensitive enough for me. It even picks up the rust left behind by long-departed nails. It is interesting that in them ole days there was evidently a surplus of nails as they used vastly more than anyone could possibly think were necessary. And it wasn't because they had nail guns or anything.

The buzzer and vibration modes leave no doubt that it is activated.

I took off a star because this is very long and only part of it is active, so that is silly and makes it harder to use than necessary. Maybe that is a little harsh. It is a good and useful product, one that is necessary for those of us who use recycled wood. It is cheap insurance for your various blades. I recommend it.

Customer Review: It works as advertised
Summary: 4 Stars

I have purchased both units separately. The small unit can pickup heads of nail etc in walls but it is not sensitive enough to check for metal in wood before planing. The large red unit is great - it has an ear piece so you can hear sound as it senses metal while you in a noisy shop or other area as well as a vibrating mode or both.

I did one sensitivity test. I drove 1/2" 18guage finish nail from my air gun into a 3/4" block of wood recessing it a fraction of an inch below the surface. The big unit picked up the brad on both sides of the wood. The little unit couldn't find it. I believe it's because their isn't enough mass in the tiny nail. If you like to recycle lumber or repair old furniture then the red unit will save your planer and saw blades which = frustration and money. It's great for finding hidden nails in repaired furniture

Customer Review: Shoulda kept the knob- wizard III
Summary: 4 Stars

This seems to be a pretty sensitive gadget. I want to recycle some used furniture (got a solid oak headboard that will make a fine little shelf) and other expensive old wood. So if it saves me a torn up blade or a wrecked planner or jointer knife, then its well worth it.
The beef I have is that instructions say you need to adjust the fine tuning with a nonmetalic screwdriver, and the package says just a screwdriver. I made a straight blade screwdriver out of a chopstick and it worked fine. Why didn't they just put a plastic knob on the adjustment so I dont have to go looking for a tool everytime I want to tune it?? The rest of it is very simple to operate, and the vibrate feature works very nicely so you dont have to be looking at the wand all the time for the lights.
