Description of iRobot 530 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, WhiteiRobot Roomba 530 Vacuum Cleaning Robot - iRobot Roomba Vacuum and Innovative Roomba Vacuum Cleaner Specifically developed as a solution for life's hairy or furry situations faced by many pet parents, the iRobot Roomba 530 Vacuum Cleaning Robot brings convenience to keeping your home and pet area clean. You'll be amazed at the amount of pet hair, kitty litter, dirt, dust and other pet-related debris that this Roomba vacuum cleaner will pick up from your carpeting and hard flooring. This specific model systematically cleans up to three* rooms on a single charge and even gets into hard-to-reach wall edges and underneath furniture. The iRobot Roomba vacuum is so innovative that it knows when to avoid stairs and other drop-offs, while also automatically adjusting from carpeting to hard flooring and back again. The Roomba 530 model includes two Auto Virtual Walls that are designed to block it from entering off-limit areas. And when the cleaning is complete or when the battery is running low, your Roomba 530 will return to its compact Home Base to dock and recharge. What's in the Box:1 iRobot Roomba 5302 Compact Virtual Walls (Require 2 C batteries each, not included)1 Compact Self-charging Home Base1 Power Supply (3-hour charge time)1 Brush Cleaning Tool1 Rechargeable Battery1 Extra Filter*Note: Room size based on 100 square feet of hardwood or low-pile carpet with minimal furniture. Tools and Hardware Reviews of iRobot 530 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, WhiteCustomer Review: Saves time but requires patience and MAINTENENCE Summary: 5 Stars
We now own 3 Roombas. All have worked quite well BUT they do require some "pre cleaning" before you run them.
We have a large dog and 3 kids and have hardwood throughout a 2600sf house. Our boys as all children have a tendency to leave toys and clothes on the floor. Before running the Roomba you will have to pick up the "obstacles" otherwise the vacuum will either suck them up or get stuck on them (they like to get stuck on socks) You then place the lighthouses by doorways to keep the Roomba where you want it to clean otherwise it tends to wander off.
Now I'd like to explain some of the differences between the lower models and the more expensive 500 series units.
Our Dirt Dog is considered a 400 series and really isn't a vacuum as it picks up dirt by trapping it between 2 counter rotating brushes and throws it into an onboard container. The Dirt dog is intended for garage use and it works well inside as well as we often use it in the basement as well as sometimes in the kitchen.
I find it interesting that if you run the 400 it will collect a good amount of dirt but then if you run the 530 right after it still collect a lot more dirt that the 400 series was not able to pick up.
Our 530 (the featured model) is a considerable step up. Improvements include not only the counter rotating brushes (one is actually a beater bar) but an actual vacuum motor that gets fine dust off the floor. Most importantly the 500 series benefits from a vastly more intelligent processing system. Our 530 gets on and off rugs that we have throughout the first floor even the ones that have fringes on the ends it can get itself unstuck if it runs over a cord all things that cause the 400 series to shut down. (our 400 will rarely make it onto a thick rug)
As stated earlier we have a dog a Rottweiler/ Chow mix she's a good dog and great with the kids but she sheds horribly she also has this thing where she can't eat her food in the kitchen. She picks up a mouthful of food and takes it in the family room and eats it there unfortunately a good amount of it ends up on the floor.
Our 530 easily picks up the hair and the scattered Kibble but then requires that you clean out and empty the onboard container. This means that you first remove the container open it and dump the contents if its hair then you have to stick your finger in there and pull it out. Once a month I swap out the filter with a clean one (you just rinse them off in the sink).
The second step is to open up the brush tray and remove the brushes they will have a ton of hair around them we use a dog grooming brush that has retractable plastic fingers to clean the brush once you are done you retract the fingers and the brush releases all the hair. I should also state that for us cleaning out the brushes and dirt tray are required every time we use the unit.
Lastly you may need to pop off the front wheel and remove and hair but usually that only is required every 3 or 4 weeks.
Snap it all back together and your ready to go again.
FAILURES
The Roombas are all built using "cartridges" should a part fail you just replace the damaged "cartridge" each wheel, spin brush, vacuum tray and brush assembly are individual cartridges. They are easy to remove with just a screwdriver. My only complaint here is that the cartridges from the 400 series are not compatible with other series units (neither are the batteries)
Our 530 is almost 2 years old I have replaced the spin brushes 3 times at a cost of about $20 (for all 3) brushes purchased from an ebay seller
I have also had to replace the brush tray this is the part that has the motor that turns the main brushes this part was $40 plus shipping also from an ebay seller
I have purchased 3 replacement filters at $10 (for all 3) none have worn out I just rinse and swap them out when they are dirty.
Lastly I upgraded the brushes to the new "pet friendly" ones they were $30 for the set these brushes now come standard on new units.
MY 400 Series had an issue about 4 months ago where it kept backing up I called Roomba they said to clean it with compressed air and that did the job I have had to replace the 3 finger brushes on the 400 about 3 times.
Overall we are very happy with our Roombas we recently bought a Roomba Scooba that sprays a cleaner down I plan to use it not with the clorox cleaner that Roomba recommends but with Bona Kemi's hardwood floor cleaner as that is what we use and are very happy with that brand of cleaner.
I would recommend any of the 500 series units to anyone who asks as long as you are ok with cleaning the unit regularly as its definitely messier than just throwing away a bag from a regular vacuum cleaner. (those with allergies might not like having clean the unit, The dust and hair bothers me a bit but I deal with it because I like the units.)
DOGS: to those who complain that it upsets their dog, give it time after a few weeks of consistent use they will ignore it my dog doesn't even bother to get up anymore when the Roomba hits her she knows it will turn and go on its way in a second or two.
BUY ONE! just remember it will take a month for you to get used to it doing its thing.
