Tools and Hardware Reviews of iRobot Roomba 400 Vacuum-Cleaning Robot, Orange

Customer Review: Very helpful for a mother of two
Summary: 4 Stars

I wonder why I didn't buy a roomba sooner. This Roomba is a basic model but it cleans well and is easy to maintain, and that's important to me. At $149, I still think it's good value (although I wish I had bought it when it was on sale for $70 something!). The only complaint I have is that the battery that came with it only runs about 40 minutes at a time. And that only cleans 1 room. I had to wait 2 hours for Roomba to recharge before cleaning another room. Also, the replacement filter is costly. But what I do is I wash the filter after each use, and it's like new again (while the filter is drying, another can be used). Rather than replacing the filter every month, I am hoping it will last for several months.

Customer Review: Works great, but don't buy the optional Drive-on Home Base
Summary: 4 Stars

The iRobot Roomba 400 works great, and my wife loves it. It won't pick up everything, and doesn't have near the suction power of a normal vacuum cleaner, but leave it alone for twenty minutes and it does the job. My only complaint is that the 400 model doesn't fully work with the Roomba 4900 Self-Charging Drive-on Home Base. The 400 model doesn't have the technology to find or return to the Home Base, nor a button to tell it to do so, so the Roomba 400 will run until its battery wears out and ends up stopping anywhere in the room. You have to manually set the Roomba 400 on the Home Base for it to charge, and for $50+ the Home Base is a waste for this model.

Customer Review: My wife loves her new Roomba, the dogs don't.
Summary: 4 Stars

It is kind of neat the way it bumbles its way around the house vacuuming as it goes. It misses some stuff unless you let it run for a long, long time, but it picks up an amazing amount of dust and animal hair. It has to be emptied often, but it is a lot easier to use than a regular vacuum. Our dogs track in a lot of dirt and so do I. So it gets used a lot. Its nice to be able to walk around our bedroom barefoot without having to brush off our feet before getting into bed. The dogs and cats are used to it now, but they still give it a wide berth. It does miss things in corners, but does a great job under beds and other furniture.

Customer Review: Works As advertised!
Summary: 4 Stars

Pretty good machine. Got it for a good price and since have bought the dock and virtual walls. Please remember this is the basic model so you just get enough to get the roomba going and thats it. But even after I vacuum, it seems to always find something and I run it when I leave for work so it does its job when I'm gone. I now find myself vacuuming less and not worring if my floors are clean!

Customer Review: Takes too much time
Summary: 3 Stars

When the Roomba 400 arrived I was enthralled with the novelty of it. It works very well indeed. But soon I realized that it saves me time and effort ONLY when it vacuums the kitchen floor. In there I have to pick up the dogs' water bowls, etc., and then it can get to work. BUT..all my rugs throughout the house are handmade and have fringes. As the directions say, it stalls on the fringe so the fringes have to be tucked under the rug. The time it takes me to do that is longer, and harder on my BACK, than it takes me to get my upright vacuum out and vacuum in the regular way. So basically, what I bought was an expensive way to vacuum the kitchen floor. If you have wall to wall or bare floors it might suit you very well, but because of its erratic movements it takes a long time to vacuum an average room.
