Tools and Hardware Reviews of iRobot Roomba SilverCustomer Review: Don't Bother Summary: 3 Stars
I have the green (sage!) 400 series pet version which this silver model most closly resembles. OK, when they work they do a good job. However I don't expect to have to replace the $70.00!! battery after little over a year! All the battery consists of is some rechargable C cells connected in series and put in a speciality box to fit the vacuum. Thankfully there are some cheaper kits right here on Amazon. All in all, I wouldn't bother, just get yout normal vacuum out and get it done yourself.
Customer Review: Not durable. Summary: 3 Stars
After only 6 months, my Roomba has bit the dust. A replacement battery is $50-70. Replacement filters and consumable parts are $30. These things are cash cows for iRobot.
Customer Review: Marketing is ahead of quality Summary: 2 Stars
Think twice before buying one of these. I get the impression that these are being sold before the bugs have been worked out.
I liked our Roomba, but it wasn't worth the $200+ dollars for just a year of service. Ours died just outside of the 1 year warranty, and iRobot had very little comment. First they told me to buy a new battery. However, a family member let me borrow a new, unused battery (which I prepared as per the instructions) and it didn't cure the problem. After another email or two in which the diagnosis changed except that it involved buying something new, iRobot determined- without the benefit of ever having seen the unit- that it and its charging base were dead. They offered to sell me a new one at a "special price" which turned out to be about $20 MORE than Costco charged for virtually the same model. Considering Costco makes a profit, it seems iRobot could have actually charged below Costco's price without taking a hit in either the accounting or good will departments.
Furthermore, I know four other people who have purchased various models of Roomba including the family member mentioned above, and ALL of them have had to either return their units or have them replaced. One owner even had two major problems with hers, which is one of the newest units (she got it this time last year). I don't expect perfection, but this is a bit too much to be a coincidence. There seem to be a lot of satisfied buyers here, but there are also more than usual who have had serious complaints for a product in this price range. Again, think very carefully before buying this product.
Customer Review: Good idea, poor reliability Summary: 2 Stars
Let me start by saying this is a great concept. I wound up getting two of these (one upstairs and one downstairs) and spent a significant amount of money on accessories and extra batteries and parts.
For the amount of money you spend this should be much more reliable. My Roomba silver electronics died after about a year (just outside of warrantee). My Roomba Red died a couple months into use. It was still in warrantee but repair turn around took a long time, and when it came back it died again. I returned it again and was given a refurbished model in its place. Worked a short time then it also died. By this time this too was out of warrantee.
Not worth the money for the headache and problems.
Also you spend more time setting up the areas to clean so Roomba won't get trapped or in trouble. It would be faster to grab a Hoover and just go at it. A lot less expensive and more reliable, too.
Customer Review: cheapo shoddy construction, limited utility Summary: 2 Stars
Good idea poorly executed, the unit is poorly designed and to top it off cheaply constructed. The dust gets in everywhere in the unit, removing the bin spills things all over the place. Minimal debris/dust collection capacity, a cup maybe which is nothing compared to 1-2 gallons in normal vacuums, filter the size maybe a quarter of the table napkin. Laughable. Suction power equally laughable. Constructed extremely cheaply to drive renewed purchases I quess. Good only for occasional finishing sweeps (it goes everywhere you with your normal vacuum may not) and pet hair collection. Nothing else. Sorry now I bought it. The fresh battery last me only 60 minutes which is barely enough to clean one small room. Make sure you get the model with the base station - otherwise having to manually plug it in gets old in no time whatsoever. Like in a week or so.
