Customer Review: ***Great Kitchen Garbage Can***
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently purchased the 23-gallon iTouchless Stainless Steel NX trash can for use in my kitchen. I have always hated changing bags every 2-3 days in the woefully inadequate 13-gallon standard kitchen-style cans, so I decided to upgrade to a much larger can. My appliances are all stainless steel, so the cheap, ugly, plastic Walmart-style cans were not an option for me.

Although many would say $150.00 is too much to spend on a kitchen garbage can go ahead and price the somewhat comparable one's at Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Linens & Things - you will quickly find out any stainless garbage can is expensive.

Now onto the review of the product:

The 23-gallon trash can is a great size and footprint for a larger kitchen. It looks right at home if you have stainless appliances. The body of the can is actually made of stainless steel and not some faux, lookalike material. With that said please realize you are not going to get a really heavy gauge steel, but it is more than adequate for the intended purpose. The top of the can is a polished steel, almost chrome-like, along with matte black plastic for the lid. The can also comes with 4 castor wheels which you can just push onto the bottom if you desire. I like the wheels installed because it allows you to easily move the can near your working area (island, stove, etc.) to throw away scraps very easily - instead of dragging dripping, messy stuff across the room to the can.

The can requires 4 D-size batteries (not included) and will last, according to the instructions, 10,000 cycles - or you can opt for the AC-plug which you would have to buy separately. The lid functions when your hand, or other item, gets about 6-inches away from the sensor just in front of the lid. It works quite well, but it is not instant. Give it a second to open and then after it no longer detects movement it shuts a few seconds later. I really like not having to touch a dirty garbage can lid, but I hope it works dependably long-term. It also offers simple "open" and "close" buttons on the top of the lid.

The trash can uses standard 30-gallon bags and it comes with a plastic ring to keep the bag top hidden and tucked inside. It works just fine. If you are looking for a larger, attractive trash can for your kitchen this seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Customer Review: Works like it claims
Summary: 4 Stars

One thing I hate about these stupid reviews is that people are reviewing different items than the one shown, so the reviews aren't even accurate. Many of the reviews shown here for the NX 23 gallon model are actually for some of the lesser iTouchless trash can models. What a worthless review system. Another thing that is annoying are these people claiming that the unit broke immediately. The stainless steel can is very sturdy and with reasonable care it will not dent. Of course if you kick it or throw it, I am sure it would dent. But why would you spend this much money on a high tech stylish trash can and then kick it ? The motorized plastic lid works fine. Yes the lid is plastic and I am sure you could break it if you ripped it open by hand or pulled on it very hard. But once again why ? You don't need to open it by hand... it is automatic !!!! Are these people savages ? This trash can is not made for Gorillas. Take care of your stuff and it will last a very long time. My only complaint is that it is made in China, like almost everything you buy these days. I always want to buy American. American quality is the best in the World and buying American keeps money in our own country. Unfortunately due to all of the cheap consumers out there looking to save a few cents, American products can't compete. God forbid we would have to spend a few dollars more on something if it were made in America. In the long run, we would all be better off buying American. More jobs would stay here, more money would stay in our own economy and the quality would be top notch. Ironically now that we have improved the Chinese standard of living by buying their products, young successful Chinese people buy American products. The Chinese say it is because American quality is the best. Too bad our own people can't see that.

Customer Review: love this can!
Summary: 4 Stars

I am so spoiled now since we purchased the 23 gallon itouchless commercial size can. Besides being a beautiful addition to the kitchen it works like a champ. We have had it for 10 months now and it is still opening and closing on the same batteries, and we do a lot of opening and closing. Wheels make it easy to slide out of the way for cleaning the floor. I gave it 4 stars because the bag clamp was not included in the shipment but instead of the hassle of returning we just pull the bag down on the outside and put the lid on - which is MUCH easier and a whole lot cleaner than using the clamp. I don't know about the smaller models but these commercial size cans are tops! Well worth the investment.

Follow up: going on two years and still operating like it is suppose to - wouldn't be without it.

Customer Review: Great product but lid is very poor quality and breaks easily
Summary: 3 Stars

I've owned two of these for the past year. I think they're very good conceptually and in general do their job well, EXCEPT for one major problem: the quality of the flip-up lid is quite poor. The lid and hinges are plastic with small very rust-susceptible springs, and the plastic of the hinges cracks and breaks away far too easily, even without any abuse or misuse. They are best described as "delicate." I wouldn't discourage someone from buying the product, because mine have performed as claimed, but I've made do with both of the lids having cracks and questionable lid-lifting, and recently one of the two broke entirely and will no longer lift at all; it twists when it tries to lift, due to the broken hinge. I will have to buy a new top to the unit, if I'm able to find a place from which I can do that.

So, if you buy one, be VERY careful of the lid mechanism and baby it.

[ADDENDUM 05/01/2010]: I just received a new lid (at a cost of around $40!) from [...], and can report that the current version HAS AN IMPROVED HINGE DESIGN. Sadly, it is still a plastic lid, but the hinge itself appears more compact and is enclosed, and it operates much more quietly and without any evident twisting forces. I will re-post if it, too, develops problems, but at least the current version of the lid looks like it may hold up better.

Customer Review: Be prepared to buy a new lid down the line
Summary: 2 Stars

This is the second itouchless trash can my husband and I bought. The first one was the 13-gallon rectangular model with the plastic ring for the bag. Worked great for awhile, no sensor issues, but then the plastic parts involved in keeping the lid up and attached started breaking or coming off. After securing the lid with a twist tie for awhile, we finally decided to get this newer model. It seemed more cost-effective than getting the expensive replacement lid for the old one.

This model functions fine as a trash can but has its own set of quirks and problems. The metal ring to keep the bag up is a joke (we even tried strong magnets underneath it to keep it from sliding down inside the can) so we no longer use it, just put the bag hanging over the sides of the can. Each time we change the trash bag, the sensor goes a bit funny for several hours. It refuses to open, so we have to leave it alone and it eventually rights itself and works fine again. Aside from that, the can worked as it should for nearly a year. Then just a few days ago, the part involved in raising the lid and keeping it open broke and now it won't open. The motor sounds so pathetic because it still does its part in opening and closing the lid, but nothing actually happens.

Now we're pondering just getting a step can and forgetting about all the hassle with touchless cans.
