Tools and Hardware Reviews of iTouchless Fully Automatic Stainless Steel Touchless Trashcan SX, 13 Gallon (52 Liter)Customer Review: Just So-so Summary: 3 Stars
Just received this item (07-06-07) and I have owned the iTouchless 13 gallon trash can with the pivoting lid but it broke and I didn't replace it. These are my initial impressions of the new sliding door model.
1. My 13 gallon bags (Smart & Final Tall Kitchen Bags w/drawstring, 24 x 27-3/8 inches) don't fit because the trash can is too deep by about an inch or inch and a half. I'll have to find something about an inch or more thick to put on the bottom of the can so that my bags will reach high enough to use the bag retainer ring. Maybe other brand bags will fit properly?
2. The sliding lid looks like it will accumulate more dust than the pivoting lid. It will be harder to clean too.
3. The sliding lid mechanism has a noisy geared mechanism. The pivoting lid was much, much quieter. I'll have to see if I can get used to the noise.
4. The sliding lid opening looks like it is either larger or a more convenient shape than the pivoting lid was.
The user manual says 4 D-cells will last "up to" 10,000 uses. They don't say if an opening cycle followed by a closing cycle is 1 use or 2 uses.
Update 07-12-07.
1. None of the name brand 13 gallon bags are taller than the Smart & Final bags I am using. Eighteen gallon trash compactor bags will fit, but cost more. So much for their, "Fits any 13 or 18 gallon trash bags," statement. I'm sure a styrofoam spacer can be put on the bottom of the can so I can use my 13 gallon bags.
2. The sliding lid has malfunctioned a couple of times. I pressed the manual open button and the lid only opened partially. After opening and closing the lid a few times it appears to be a temporary problem.
3. When China can't make a reliable trash can, why is Boeing now buying aircraft parts from them?
Update 07-31-07:
1. It turns out that I can get used to the gear noise.
2. The sliding door opens too slowly. The pivoting lid model opened much more quickly. If iToucheless doubled the speed it would be about right.
3. There have been no more malfunctions.
4. Adding a spacer to the inside of bottom of the can makes 13 gallon bags fit properly.
Customer Review: Not all it promises to be... Summary: 3 Stars
Overall, I'm happy with it because in its most basic way, it works. My complaints are:
1. The sensor doesn't work as it the instructions state. You have to hover about 1 inch or lower in order for the sensor to tip and the cover to open. It's supposed to be about 6 inches.
2. It's LOUD! Both when it opens and closes.
3. There is a plastic lip along the inside top of the can. This causes any item in the way to tear the bag! Luckily I only have to empty once a week, but when I do, it's entirely too much effort just to get the bag out of the can.
That's about it! Would I recommend it? I think you can do better. When I bought it it was crazy cheap and free shipping, so I couldn't pass it up. I would never buy one for over $60 though.
Customer Review: Works OK, very poorly packaged Summary: 3 Stars
The unit works pretty well, and the sensor is much better than the old models. They used to open just by walking by, but they've eliminated that problem.
But... the packaging was horrible. It came with a big dent in the side, and a huge sticker with the features on the front. That sticker does not come off, it just tears into little strips, even with goo-gone... and of course, you can't scrape it off of stainless steel. So, I've returned the item. Whoever thought that sticker was a good idea should be fired!
Customer Review: As advertised but OH SO Noisey Summary: 3 Stars
The older reviews are quite comprehensive and accurately describe this product.
However, the noisey mechanism should cannot be over stated. The vertically operating models are noiseless and very rapid. This mechanism operates more slowly and generates a loud grinding noise.
Otherwise, this is a sleek, attractive unit that fits well into most contemporary kitchen designs.
Customer Review: Kat from d.c. Summary: 3 Stars
I found out the problem with this trash can about pulling out the bag when its full. I took the screws out that holds the 4 little things, that is in the way then set the frame top back on the top of the can. I don't have no more problems. This should help a lot of people that is going through the same problem. It worked for me and should work for you.
