I just purchased this can as a replacement for the previous generation with the lid that flips up. It is a serious, and borderline unusable, step backwards for iTouchless. My family was extremely pleased with the last can. It needed to be replaced when the lid was dropped and cracked. While it was imperfect, it had served us well for a bit over a year.
The new can is not worth the money even with the current $20 promotion. The reviewers who mentioned the plastic teeth in the retaining rim are correct. While the bags have not torn for me, this is solely a testament to the fact that I slid my hand into the can to keep the snags from tearing the bag. Clearly this is absurd for a "touchless" trash can.
The opening mechanism is weak and slow. I have had the can for three days and it has stopped working a half dozen times (on brand new batteries). I had to move it with my hand to loosen it at which time it would work again for a few more openings.
The reviews that mention that standard bags are too small for the can are also accurate. Ironically, despite this, it is difficult to pull the full bag from the can.
Overall this purchase was a complete misfire. I strongly suggest you look elsewhere for a trashcan. If the touchless feature interestes you, get the previous version with the flip lid. In the end this model is in no real way touchless.

Since on occasion viewpoints will change after time has passed I thought I'd update this review. After trying to live with this for several months it is now itself in the trash. Between the near impossibility of removing a bag intact and the unreliability of the opening mechanism we couldn't take it any more. It is one of the worst purchases I have ever made. It is a stunningly poor product. Amazon should stop carrying item and the manufacturer should discontinue it immediately.

What a waste of time and energy. I had to give it one star in order to write this review...but that is way over-rating this pathetic little piece of metal. My first order came shipped via UPS in its own damaged retail box. There was no outer packaging. Upon taking it out of the box I realized it was really wobbly - like the table at the restaurant with an uneven leg - and then, we tried to put the lid on and make it work-which was a joke. The lid consists of 4 slats that slide back and forth. Ours unfortunately only came with 3 of the 4 slats and they were disconnected from one another. Basically it was broken. SO, I filled out the online request form to have another one shipped to me. What a surprise when it arrived well packaged with an exterior carboard box (unlike the first one). I thought we had a winner. Then, I realized there were 6 layers of tape on the box - it had clearly been opened and returned over and over again. We still tried to make it work. I couldn't believe it...This lid was broken too! All the slats were separated from each other so it wouldn't pull open or closed...and the sensor didn't work. One of the slats was jammed up in the inside of the lid and wouldn't come out by using the open or close button. The 4th slat was found inside the trashcan. Anywway, I have had to re-wrap and package both of these monsters and haul them to the post office to return them. What an annoyance. Exactly 1 month after the 1 year warranty was up, the lid broke. It just stopped moving, as if it came out of the gears. Then shortly after it just quit even trying (even with fresh batteries)--no noise nothing. Something inside just malfunctioned I guess. Paid good money for this but it is NOT WORTH IT. Save your money and look elsewhere.
Besides the lid dying, the design of the interior is horrible, as others have mentioned. When you go to remove the bag full of garbage, sharp tabs on the inside top (that are like a shelf for the lid) cut vertically into the bag in 1-4 places! Trash everywhere! Just dumb--didnt they test this thing before manufacturing it?
Looks nice and I really needed the garage door type lid as it sits under an overhang from the counter (so flip up lids dont work--and we wanted a lid). Sadly this iTouchless can has shattered my dreams.
Also, a somewhat more minor gripe: the lid is too slow to open--put your hand there to throw away some garbage and you have to unnaturally pause for 1 second.
DO NOT BUY!!

After 11 1/2 months, the garbage can lid closed off-center, causing the hinge to break and become inoperable. I activated the 1 year warranty, paid $20 for s&h, and received a new lid. After NOT EVEN 3 MONTHS of limited use, the same exact problem recurred. This is a design flaw. I contacted iTouchless to request a warranty replacement, and was told that the warranty applied only to the original purchase and NOT to the replacement. Efforts to contact a supervisor were fruitless, so I intend to contact the California State Atty General-Consumer Complaints Division to file a complaint. I would not recommend this piece of garbage lid or piece of garbage company to anyone.Customer Review: try another style

I have been a touchless garbage can devotee for a few years. I ordered this one because I like the lid that would slide instead of fly up to open. So far I have not had lid problems like other reviewers BUT just try to get the bag out of it when it's full - ha! You need one person to hold the can and another to try to wrestle out the bag because it does not come out easily. The can seems to be smaller on the top than on the bottom or maybe it's because of the plastic rim inside at the top - regardless of why - it is a super pain to get the bag out! I wish I could do the video option and show you - but please take my word for it and shop for another model!
