Tools and Hardware Reviews of simplehuman Sensor Pump, for Soap or Sanitizer, Black, 14 Ounces

Customer Review: Just the right amount of soap, reliably
Summary: 5 Stars

Nine months ago, one of these showed up by the sink in the kitchen at my office, which is shared by around 50 people. I have been intrigued as I watched it reliably deliver a "dab" of diswhashing soap countless times a day. My first impression was "somebody's throwing money away at work". The design was attractive, and as I used it, I noticed it did not leak. Best of all, it was the perfect way to get soap on very dirty or greasy hands without getting grease or dirt on the soap container.

Finally, I was at home last week, trying to wipe the dripped soap from the regular dispenser off our counter, and said, "wait a minute, I know a better way," and placed an order. Because this thing had held up so well in our office, I had no trepidation about paying the somewhat hefty price. That said, when this arrived, my wife and I had it up and running in five minutes, although I will concede the instructions are "succinct". I can see how the priming "scrap of paper" could have been missed, but it also seems to be clear in the rest of the packaging what to do.

This is an attractive and very functional tool and is elegant in design and manufacture. Simplehuman obviously gives great thought to the design and manufacture of their products, and as my wife looked through their catalog, I am reconciled that this will turn out to be more expensive than the purchase price (as my wife identifies other needs).

I believe we will end up saving significant money by not wasting nearly as much dishwashing soap. I find the amount dispensed entirely adequate to cleaning greasy pots and pans, so I'm sure it's fine for ordinary dishes too. I will be washing more dishes by hand now that my wife has noticed the Simplehuman dish draining racks in their catalog.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Customer Review: The product works great, if it didn't for you, then this is why
Summary: 5 Stars

I see a bunch of people have written bad reviews - all along the lines that it doesn't dispense soap. All complaints appear to be about the little spout. Let me just say - the soap dispenser works. It dispenses soap. If yours "doesn't work" this is why: there is a little piece of plastic about the size of a tiny pea that is where the soap comes out. This little piece of plastic is flush with the surrounding plastic, but if you actually look at it you will definitely see it. Sticking out of the little plastic piece is just more plastic (like a itty bitty plastic short toothpick) there to give you something to grab onto when gently pulling the little round piece of plastic away from the device- thus, no longer leaving the piece flush with the device but now slightly separated so that you guessed it- the soap can come out. The whole process takes about 2 seconds, take a pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers or anything you have that can grab small stuff and that'll do the trick.

I had originally wanted two of these but just ordered one since all these people wrote bad stuff about it. I have tested it out for a few months now and it still works like new. So now I'm here to buy that second one I should have gotten in the first place. I imagine, like every single other soap dispenser out there, the spout will need to be cleaned at some time to get the soap buildup off but when that time comes, I'll just do the logical thing and clean it rather than write some review about how it's suddenly broken.

If you are on the fence about buying it, buy it. All the bad reviews are just written by people who didn't follow the instructions.

Customer Review: I FOUND THE CURE FOR THE PROBLEM!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Simplehuman Refillable Motion-Sensor Soap Pump, as it seemed like a great idea: especially when washing my hands during and after preparing meats, fish or poultry - I wouldn't have to keep washing the soap dish or dispenser each time to rid it of blood and/or other undesirable residue.

But like some other reviewers, I couldn't get the soap to dispense. I checked and double-checked my set-up steps:

1. Insert batteries according to polarities shown on battery cover
2. Fill soap chamber with liquid soap
3. Prime (pull down & let go of little black plastic stub to unseat valve)
4. Turn volume dial to setting 4.

I was doing everything right, but no soap - literally and figuratively. I checked the troubleshooting section of the Simplehuman website, & it confirmed that I was indeed setting up correctly. Then I called the toll-free number, and the friendly representative said I had probably received a defective unit. So I returned it, set up the new unit, and voila - it also didn't dispense.

Finally, my creative sense got the best of me: What if, instead of installing the batteries "correctly," I reversed them? And what if, instead of pulling down & letting go of the little black stub I completely pulled it out?

IT WORKED!! I'm enjoying my new product - as well as my inventiveness. (And the company should obviously provide more specific directions.)

Simplehuman KT1078 Refillable 14-Ounce Motion-Sensor Soap Pump

Customer Review: Excellent product
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading the helpful reviews that point out how to deal with problems that some have had using this soap pump, I decided to purchase one with the intention of burning a small hole in the lid as suggested by other reviewers.

When the package arrived, the box that the pump came in was labeled as "the new" version of the pump, so it appears that the one I received is an updated and improved version. For one thing, the spout on mine does not have the slot that others have described, but rather a small plastic "pin" (for lack of a better word) that needs to be pulled down with either fingertips (or fingernails, really) or a pair of tweezers. The pin pulls a small section of the spout downward to apparently allow some air into the spout chamber for first time use. The pin and small spout section then return to their original position.

I had no trouble getting the pump to prime whatsoever. In fact, it began pumping soap before I had finished the priming procedure, so I actually spilled some soap on the floor because I was not expecting it to come out yet. I set the dial to the lowest setting for the smallest amount of soap, and there was more than enough soap dispensed on the lowest setting, in fact more than I generally use.

I did go ahead and use a hot needle to put a small hole in the lid just in case, but I don't know if it was necessary with this updated version or not. We've had the pump for about a month now, and have had no problems with it, and our guests have all asked where we bought it and where they could get one.

Customer Review: Third year using, still going strong
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had mine purchased from BBB for three years now, and I have come to depend heavily on this unit.
Noticing there are lots of negative reviews, here are my takes on the negative aspects I have seen:
-If not used constantly (eg I am gone during the weekends, so I do not use it then) once it's used again, the soap that is ready to come out will be moreso coagulated than normal, and not run as easily.
-If the soap is too 'runny', the motor will have difficulties pumping it out. Also, stick to clear soaps to get the best result.
-Rechargeable batteries work just as well as regular batteries. I have only changed my batteries three times since purchasing it. I used Kirkland brand, Energizer Lithiums, and now I am using rechargeable Energizers. Have had very long and reliable battery life on all brands. I do not turn off the unit, and I use it on level 2-3 depending on the soap I use.
-If you want to use a thicker soap, water it down slightly (you have to mix it for it to blend in properly!) Only use distilled water.

I've never had a seal problem, but make sure your seals are free of particles when replacing the cover when adding batteries.

I have just purchased a newer model (the brushed aluminum) for my sister; if she has problems I will report it here.

This is a great necessity for people who cook a lot and like to be sanitary. I handle raw meats constantly, and wash my hands every few minutes while cooking.
